Our project
Since the beginning of the year 2005, Studies without Borders made the participation in biannually computer lessons for financial needy young people possible. Because of these computer lessons they learned basic information about information technology, the use of the Office programs and the internet, which is very worthwhile for the employement market. Together with our partner institute ‘Infinity Centre for Higher Studies’ in Vavinuya, we plan to expand the scholarship program to a triannual study course in the domains IT, management and marketing. Besides, we want to offer additional English lessons. Due to their acquired knowledge, they are able to contribute to the reconstruction and reconciliation in their home countries besides their study by working in local voluntary NGOs. The feedback from the NGO about the effort of our scholarship holders was very positive. Since 2016 they also support our partner to build new locations in the surrounding villages. Consequently, the villagers who often can’t go to Vavuniya because of the long journey, are able to participate in the computer lessons.
Our local partner
2013, our local partner Christie Samuel founded the Infinity Centre for Higher Studies in Nilaveli, a small city in the district Trincomalee in the Northeast of Sri Lanka. In his institution of education, he want to make studies for needy young people in conflict areas possible independent of gender, religion or ethnically membership. We like his target to campaign for students, who can’t afford studies by themselves and who are especially motivated to improve their environment. Therefore we decided to help him to realize his goal. In the beginning of the year 2015, a new location in Vavuniya, in the North of Sri Lanka, could built, where our scholarship holders study. Computer lessons and lessons in marketing and tourism are offered there. Since 2016 our partner built a new location in Tharanikulam, a village near Vavuniya. Consequently, the young people in the surrounding villages, who often can’t go to Vavuniya because of the long journey, are also able to participate in the computer lessons. In January 2017, the number of the new locations increased. Christie Samuel offers also a further education in the villages Eswaripuram and Cheddikulam. Now, the people can also acquire knowledge in the domains softskill training and account staff. We are very happy that we get more and more applications.
Our scholarship holders
Currently (January 2017), we support four scholarship holders. One scholarship holder is from Tharanikulam and the other three are from Vavuniya. Eight scholarship students have already finished their computer lessons and they campaigned for a local NGO in their leisure time. A scholarship holder has already started her own social project. She teaches people from the village, who can’t visit evening classes. Our current scholarship holders also begin to work at their own social projects. They get involved with the care of the elderly or they contribute to the reconstruction of their home country because of the civil war. Some of them work voluntary as tutors.
